Situated
on the second floor, the Women’s Studies Centre is a research centre with an archive of documents for Women’s Studies in the UAE and the rest of the Arab world.
The library and database are presently being established to provide access to a wide range of documentation providing information and the results of research in this field.
Bait Al Banat is a gallery that is a space for future regional and international collaborations, working with other galleries, museums, art organizations, and artists from all over the world. The first exhibition in this Gallery is: Zayed Empowering Women. It is highlighting the late president of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his contribution to women.
The Centre was
opened by His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research on 14th of December 2012. Sheikh Zayed is acknowledged for his effort to empower the women of the UAE. His wise approach in a conservative tribal society, where he encouraged the individuals and tribes to accept the participation of women in all fields of work.
Situated at the entrance to the Women’s Museum, the charming Banat Bu Ghanem Café is a public space that links the Museum with the local community. Local coffee blends and other traditional treats can be enjoyed, surrounded by displays of work by UAE artists. The café sells a wide range of giftware including crafts, textiles, artwork, jewelry and other artisan gifts designed and manufactured in the region. Establishing a name as the guiding force in the UAE, some of its greatest women have been registered in the exceptional Women’s Museum that plays an integral part in the rich history and carry on the future of the region.
A visit to the Women’s Museum, located at Bait Al Banat in Deira,
showcases a fascinating journey through time. The museum creates a unique canvas of Emirati women through the years and celebrates a lot of their achievements in every aspect of their lives related to business, the arts, education, politics, and with society as a whole. Offering a deeper appreciation for the women behind the UAE’s success story The Women’s Museum is a national archive and documentation centre that is dedicated to the women of the UAE. It also concerns with all aspects of their lives and with the not just the historical and social influences but also it has shaped their philosophy; their status in society; and their place in the family. The museum is the fruit of an outstanding effort led by Dr. Rafia Ghubash, which shall introduce Emirati culture and heritage to visitors and tourists. Reviving women’s history will revive the memory of our people and the history of our nation. We support this creative effort.”
The
museum has Diwan Ousha Bint Khalifa Al Suwidi Room that is a special hall of the Museum specifically for poetic heritage of the well-known renowned poet Ousha Bint Khalifa, known also as ‘The Girl of the Arabs’. It states a lot about her life story and charts her poetic experience through sound and images. The exhibition links the poet’s legacy with the achievements of contemporary women poets of the UAE.
The Museum welcomes visitors from Saturday to Thursday from 10:00 to 19:00.
