Alessandro Balteo-Yazbeck is back to Green Art Gallery
with another solo show in 2018. The Venezuelan-Italian-Lebanese artist’s work is generally based on raising awareness of ideological dynamics, highlighting sociopolitical questions and the role of propaganda in sociopolitical strategies.
In ‘Instrumentalized’, Balteo-Yazbeck pairs two bodies of work that confront the “propagandisation” of human rights since early ages to the present climate where human tragedy is used by institutions to further specific ideological agendas. Art lovers can see an impressive display of talent of transforming everyday things into work of art, Balteo-Yazbeck will feature bold displays with used clothing that behaves like painting and sculptures.
The Green Art Gallery opened its doors in 1995, to introduce contemporary Arab artists. It helps artists to develop by educating them about exhibiting, and promoting themselves abroad. Arabic inspired sculptures and paintings reflect the Arabic world, people, heritage and culture. Original art, limited edition prints, and handcrafted items
from international artists are also on display at the Green Art Gallery. The collection includes works from artists such as Jaber Alwan, Paul Guiragossian, Ismail Fattah, Fateh Moudarres, Hrair and Omar Hamdi Malva.
Green Art Gallery went through rebranding and rearrangement of its artist roster, and curatorial focus. In 2010, the gallery moved to a 3000 sqft warehouse space, which allowed many more creative and innovative processes to take place. Central to the curatorial program, are modern-day artists from the Middle East, North Africa, South East Asia, and Turkey. Most recently, the gallery has continued to grow with the additions of internationally renowned and emerging artists including Hale Tenger, Kamrooz Aram, and Shadi Habib Allah to the artist roster. One of the first galleries to represent and promote regional art, Green Art Gallery has a diverse and more contemporary approach.
Green Art Gallery is prominent in Dubai’s art scene, as the director Yasmin Atassi shares her views on the new features in the Bohemian art quarter, Al Quoz, and about informs about the gallery. The original gallery was opened in 1995 by her late mother, Mayla, along with partner Amna Dabbagh.
The pair were considered revolutionary at the time for being the first to introduce local art. “Many of the artists they represented are now considered masters of regional modern art,” says Atassi. “In 2008, I took over and relaunched the gallery, representing contemporary art from the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey.”
To ensure a bright future for this deeply rooted gallery brand, Atassi wishes to attract more serious collectors within the region, who can provide funding for the artists.
