Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, lead a marine parade yesterday afternoon through Dubai Creek as part of celebrations by the Executive Council marking the 37th UAE National Day anniversary under the slogan "National Day – Live United".
The marine parade was led by traditional dhows followed by modern sailboats festooned with UAE flags. The colourful flotilla comprised seafaring crafts of all shapes and sizes – old and new, slow and fast – encapsulating the evolving relationship between the people, the Creek and the sea.
Dubai Culture and Arts Authority also participated in the National Day Dhow Parade held on Dubai Creek, signifying the importance of this waterway that represents not only the historic commercial and trading heart, but also the future centre of its cultural scene.
The authority's dhow carried distinguished cultural and artistic personalities in the UAE, including poets and writers, as well as a marine heritage ensemble.
The parade featured many surprises and an array of captivating displays.
The vessels made their way up the Creek, sailing under the bridges and past the high-rise buildings standing on the two sides of the watercourse in Bur Dubai and Deira that have come to signify Dubai's vibrant economic atmosphere.
The event synopsised the emirate's march and the history of its people, which has been associated with the sea, deep-sea diving and overseas trade. It was a crossover journey from the present to the past, from modern buildings to the old houses of Dubai, to the Spice Souq, the Bastakiya district and to the other vintage sites spread on both flanks of the creek.
Dubai customs also participated in the parade with nine fully decorated vessels, in addition to decorating their headquarters at the entrance of the Creek, and many customs employees saluted the parade when it passed in front of them.
The coast guard group participated in the parade with a number of new vessels, in addition to facilitating the movement of the parade and ensuring all participating boats anchored by the Shindagha heritage village.
At the Shindagha village, the festivity was concluded with a number of heritage events to reminisce and celebrate the glories of the past and to look at the future.
