ABU DHABI // Tonight’s friendly match between the UAE national team and Manchester City is a sell-out, organisers said yesterday.
The capacity for the game at Zayed Sports City was 25,000, said Thomas Gurtner, the match director for the friendly, even though the stadium has a total capacity of 45,000.
“This is a test event for the Club World Cup,” Mr Gurtner said. “As the nominated Fifa test fixture, we are applying systems for the first time in preparation for the Club World Cup.
“Zayed Sports City has been limited to a capacity for these reasons, and we’re fully sold out and expecting a great game.”
Tickets were priced at Dh25 (US$6.80) for general admission and Dh125 for VIP seats. They had been available online, as well as at Etihad shops and Virgin Megastores in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
The English Premier League stars Stephen Ireland and Craig Bellamy are expected to be the main attractions of the visiting club, which is owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed.
David Hammett, the vice chairman of the UAE Manchester City Supporters Club, said he was pleasantly surprised by the level of entusiasm for the game. “I didn’t think the local population would be so interested,” he said.
About 300 fans from Manchester and an additional 150 UAE supporters club members had bought tickets, he said.
Mr Hammett had been contacted by a dozen people trying to get tickets. “It’s a shame because I know some people who wanted to go and they haven’t been able to get tickets,” he said. “A lot of people didn’t think it was going to sell out, so they didn’t get tickets.”
