It seems that Dubai residents are laughing their way through the credit crunch.
Following the news that tonight's comedy special, Friday Night Live: New World Order, taking place at the Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre has sold out, Showtime Arabia – the live show's organisers – has added two additional dates for tomorrow and Sunday.
Friday Night Live: New World Order's comedians will entertain audiences with a new genre of credit crunch jokes, lampooning everyone from foreign investment bankers and their obscure financial products to exaggerating the global bankers' declining fortunes and lack of foresight. Amongst them is Egyptian-American stand-up, Ronnie Khalil, who has appeared on programmes such as Late Night with Conan O'Brien. He is back in the region with fresh material and will also be hosting the show.
"I just got here after doing shows in Jordan and Egypt," Khalil told Emirates Business. "And it just shows the huge demand for stand-up comedy in the region. In these hard economic times, people need to laugh."
Joining Khalil on the three-date comedy fest is Sugar Sammy, Montreal's number one Canadian-Indian comedian, who previously has supported Dave Chapelle on tour. Filipino Canadian sensation and YouTube.com favourite, Ron Josol also makes an appearance to talk about his journey from zero to hero. And last but not least, Dubai's very own Wonho Chung will also provide the laughs with his references to Arab life.
"This year has been great because plenty of gags were invented thanks to events, such as the US Presidential elections," Khalil continued.
"Although I'm disappointed because Barack Obama is nowhere near as funny as George Bush. I wish Sarah Palin had stayed around for longer. But now the credit crunch has given us a lot more material. Times are hard, but you can't help but laugh about it." Friday Night Live: New World Order marks Showtime Arabia's third foray into bringing world-class, and more importantly, relevant stand-up comedy to the Middle East. It follows the sold-out successes of Friday Night Live: Minorities Rule, and the Axis of Evil Middle East Comedy Tour. |
