Dubai in BA's top 10 destinations for 2009

British Airways has predicted that Dubai and New York will be among the most popular long-haul destinations for British travellers next year.

The UK flag carrier announced its expected top 10 destinations on Tuesday and they also include Cape Town, Johannesburg, San Francisco, Hong Kong, St Kitts, St Lucia, Sydney and Shanghai, reported travel website ttglive.com.

Richard Tams, BA’s head of UK and Ireland sales, said: “It’s not all doom and gloom for travel in the current economic climate as destinations such as Dubai and the Caribbean Islands of St Kitts and St Lucia continue to experience growth and investment, so we anticipate greater numbers of customers wanting to travel there.

“Destinations such as New York will remain firm favourites with both business and leisure travellers despite the economic downturn as savvy flyers know there are still bargains to be had and the Far East and Australasia continue to draw people looking for real adventure experiences.”

Meanwhile, a new report suggests that holiday hotspots for 2009 for Brits will include Dubai, Turkey and Egypt.

The FCO & ABTA 2009 Travel Trends Report, produced by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Association of British Travel Agents, reveals that the number of Brits travelling to Egypt has risen by 38 percent in the last year, while the number visiting Turkey has increased by 32 percent.

The FCO report said it was worried that many British holidaymakers are not familiar with some of the up and coming holiday hotspots and is predicting a big rise in the number of Brits getting into trouble overseas.

The FCO recommends that holidaymakers should familiarise themselves with the laws and customs of their destination before booking.
