Dubai firm to build space centre in RAK
  9/5/2008 9:39:48 AM

Dubai's Space Investment Company (SIC) has entered into an agreement with the Ras Al Khaimah government through RAK Investment Authority (Rakia) to build a Dh380 million space centre in the emirate.

A spokesperson from the company said the land deal for the project has been signed.

"This is the first project of its kind in the region and will give a major boost to tourism in Ras Al Khaimah," the spokesperson said.

The company expects the facility to attract one million visitors in its fifth year of operations.

The theme park, named SpaceWorld UAE, will contain Space Camp, Aviation Camp, Robotics Centre and X-Camp Survival, in addition to a Space Mall and Hotel.

The company is the partner and licensee of the US Space and Rocket Centre (USSRC) in the region and plans to open and operate two more space centres in North Africa and the Indian sub-continent.

SpaceWorld UAE is the Middle East centre that will open in 2010.

The RAK SpaceWorld will be situated on a 1.72 million square foot site near RAK International Airport.

The architectural concept of SpaceWorld UAE has been inspired by the dynamic and organic forces of nature that define space, the company said.

The space capsule, which resembles a futuristic UFO, will have a three-point sun path all around, and a single galaxy path through a solarium tunnel.

On the inside, the capsule will hold outer space and aviation facilities and gravity-based transport systems and rides with lunar-base effects.

Retail push

The building will be connected to a space mall, where space memorabilia and articles and other technology-based products will be sold, and a suite hotel to accommodate visiting families.

The space centre will also host an entertainment area, water survival and boating lakes, lush land survival area, and rocket gardens where American space history will be on display.

"We have selected Ras Al Khaimah due to its location as a promising family destination in the Middle East," said Gazi Al Ebrahim, executive chairman of SIC.

"Ras Al Khaimah offers tourists and programme participants a natural habitat like no other in this region, including mountains, beaches and eye-pleasing fertile land. With easy access through three airports in Dubai, Sharjah and RAK, we expect SpaceWorld to attract one million visitors from the Middle East, Eastern Europe and South East Asia in its fifth year."

SpaceWorld in Ras Al Khaimah is a collaboration between SIC and the USSRC which operates the world's premiere edutainment Space park in Huntsville, Alabama, using Nasa's space programmes.

The centre will offer visitors a chance to learn about the galaxies and experience outer space dynamics through entertainment rides and games as well as interactive programmes.

With easy access through three airports in Dubai, Sharjah and RAK, we expect SpaceWorld to attract a million visitors from the Middle East, Eastern Europe and South East Asia in the fifth year."
