Dubai blast victims still await promised compensation
  9/8/2008 9:56:07 AM

Victims and relatives of the Dubai Chowk blast are still waiting for the compensation awards announced by the Chief Minister (CM), injured victims told Daily Times on Sunday.

According to details, CM Shahbaz Sharif had announced the amount of Rs 1 million for the heirs of the deceased police officials; Rs 300,000 for the families of the deceased civilians; and Rs 100,000 for all injured victims of the suicide blast at Dubai Chowk on August 13.

Meagre: The victims told Daily Times that the government had still not forwarded the promised award money. Iqbal Town Police Sub-inspector Sabir Shah, who received extensive injuries to both his legs and his ear in the incident, said that as long as he had been in the hospital his medical expense had been taken care of, however, after discharge he had to purchase medicine worth Rs 500 on a daily basis. He said that he was receiving Rs 15,000 as salary from the police department, which was insufficient to cover his medical expenditures as well as his family’s needs. He also said that while the CM had announced compensations, he had yet to receive any money in that regard.

Suhail Khan, a brother-in-law of one of the deceased, told Daily Times that the government had announced Rs 300,000 for the relatives of the deceased, however, the government had still not paid the amount to them. He said that it had been 22 days since the incident and his sister had yet to recover from the shock of the incident, while her children still waited for their father every day. He also said that although the family would do all it could to help their sister in this time, the ‘few rupees’ promised by the government would assist in the upbringing and education of the children.

An anonymous Iqbal Town police official said that Investigation in-charge Ghulam Jaffer Baloch and the head constable had been contacting senior police officials daily, however, no response had been given with regards to the Rs 1 million in compensation promised by the government.

Formalities: Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Operations Wing Chaudhry Shafiq Gujjar said that they had been completing the legal formalities for the compensation and that the victims or their relatives would receive the amount within the next few days. He said that several documents were required as proof of the legal heirs, which was causing the delay in compensation for the victims and their families.
