Cable repairs delayed, Etisalat says |

There will be a delay in repairing the undersea telecom cables connecting the Middle East to Europe that were damaged on December 19, an Etisalat spokesperson told Gulf News on Monday.
The engineers have discovered another problem with cables 400km off Alexandria, the spokesperson said, which will push back the completion of repairs to Sunday.
Repairs to two of the three cables that were damaged, the Sea MeWe4 and Sea MeWe3, will face delays, even though they were given priority.
However, the delays will not affect the UAE, the spokesperson said.
The estimated 68 per cent of voice traffic capacity from Europe that was affected in the UAE last week is said to have been restored through the use of substitute cables.
"We are working on full capacity right now, because we have other sources of connection," the spokesperson said, referring to cable connections to South Asia.
France Telecom sent ships to repair the damaged cables about a week ago, and they had initially estimated that the situation would be back to normal by Wednesday.
There has not been an update from Europe's third -largest telephone company and the cause for the disconnection is still unknown. The repair ship that arrived at the site on December 21 began work immediately, according to the company.
The cables that run from Egypt to Italy carry more than 75 per cent of traffic between the regions.
Du, the UAE's other telecom company, said in a statement earlier that it was using cables in the Far East and Western United States.
"The top 50 voice destinations are now unaffected and only 15 per cent degradation overall remains. Internet capacity is reduced, but again additional capacity is being activated to the East, which will restore performance to more normal levels," du said. |
