DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Rain washed out the quarter-finals at the Dubai Women's Open on Thursday.
Only an hour of play was achieved, and top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo led 2004 U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-2 in a first-set tiebreaker. All four quarter-finals were postponed to Friday, and the semifinals still scheduled for later that day.
The other quarter-finals include the showdown between Maria Sharapova and Martina Hingis, defending champion Lindsay Davenport against Maria Kirilenko of Russia, and Justine Henin-Hardenne versus Francisca Schiavone of Italy.
Kuznetsova went 3-0 up on Mauresmo, and missed three break points for a 4-2 lead. Mauresmo, the winner of her last three tournaments and 16 matches, forced the tiebreaker, in which she hit a backhand crosscourt to break Kuznetsova and lead 3-2 when rain returned.
It was the first time a day's play was not completed since the tournament began in 2001.
